PAEDIATRIC DIABETES ACADEMY

The Paediatric Diabetes Academy was developed by the Paediatric Diabetes Multidisciplinary team.

This project was funded by the Toy Show Appeal and the CUH Charity. This support resulted in the development of educational videos to support young people, families and the wider family system in their learning.  Video based learning is easy to access, engaging, and it can be done at a time that works best for a family. The idea to use this video model allows for evidence based, independent learning in the hope to improve learning retention.  These videos use a “Flipped classroom” model, where the young people/families become the educators. All the young people who participated in the videos have Type One Diabetes and attend the Paediatric Diabetes Service in Cork University Hospital which adds to the authenticity of these videos.

The “flipped classroom” empowers people to learn at their own pace, standardises learning and facilitates flexible learning.  Over the course of the video productions a teen advisory group of young people with type one diabetes was formed. This group provided invaluable feedback into the video content. As the project progressed, the Paediatric Diabetes Team developed the brand of Paediatric Diabetes Academy. This academy is hopefully the start of a wider project, where the Paediatric Diabetes Team hope to continue to create educational videos to empower young people and their families with Type One Diabetes.
