Lymphoedema Service

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a long-term (chronic) condition that causes swelling in the body's tissues. It can affect any part of the body but usually develops in the arms or legs. Lymphoedema develops when the lymphatic system does not work properly. There are two types of lymphoedema:

  • Primary Lymphoedema is caused by (mutations) in genes that are responsible for the development of the Lymphatic system. The faulty genes cause parts of the lymphatic system responsible for draining fluid to either not develop properly or not work as they should.
  • Secondary Lymphoedema is caused by damage to the lymphatic system or problems with the movement and drainage of fluid in the lymphatic system. It can be a result of cancer treatment, infection, injury, inflammation of the limb, or decreased movement.
