Future Plans & Developments
We have exciting plans for the future development of all sites and services over the next 5 years.
CUH Wilton Hospital Campus
The video outlines 6 major developments planned for the CUH Wilton campus over the next 5 years, taking us to our 50th anniversary. This includes opening a new;
- Heli-Pad (24/7 Operations – All Types) – December 2023
- Regional Elective Surgical Centre (Theatres & Endoscopy) – December 2024
- Academic Centre (including Cork University Clinical Medical School – CUCMS) – Sept 2025
- CUH Cancer Centre – Inpatient Bed Block – June 2025
- Regional Paediatric Centre (82 Beds, HDU, Theatres) – 2026/2027
- Trauma, Acute & Critical Care (TACC) Tower (280 Beds, 87 Critical Care Beds, 12 Emergency Theatres, ED, CF Unit, Acute Floor) - 2028
In addition we have a range of other plans in progress in 2023 alone;
- Launch our designated Level 1 Major Trauma Centre service in Q2 2023
- Opening an expanded Chemotherapy Day Unit in Q2 2023
- Upgrade our Radiology PACS System in Q2 2023
- Upgrade our PET CT (PSMA) in Q2 2023
- Upgrade our lifts serving the main ward block in Q2 2023
- Launch a SABR Lung Radiotherapy Service in Q2 2023
- Deploy a new HR & Payroll IT System in Q2 2023
- Centralise colorectal cancer operating for Cork & Kerry at CUH Wilton in Q2 2023
- Launch a park and ride service for staff, linking CUH City Services in Q2 2023
- Open a mobile Aseptic Compounding Unit (to produce Chemotherapy Drugs) by Q3 2023
- Open an additional MRI to increase inpatient capacity and launching a supra-regional 24/7 emergency MRI service in Q3 2023
- Open a new outdoor gym for CUHG Staff in Q3 2023
- Open a new Paediatric Emergency Department in Q4 2023 (enabling us to centralise all emergency care for children in Cork at CUH Wilton)
- Open new trauma facilities in Q4 2023 (including 2 Trauma Resuscitation Bays and a CT scanner in ED, an upgraded Poly-Trauma Inpatient Unit, and increasing ‘planned trauma’ theatre access
- Launch a regional 24/7 Integrated Emergency Endoscopy & Upper GI Service in Q4 2023
- Open a new blood sciences laboratory in Q4 2023
- Create 2 palliative care suites by Q4 2023
- Deploy a new Acute Floor (Emergency Department Etc.) IT System in Q4 2023
Mallow General Hospital
- Opening a new 48 bed (all single room) ward block in Q3 2023
Bantry General Hospital
- Commence building of the new Endoscopy Unit for West Cork in Q2 2023 (Open Q4 2024)
St Finbarr’s Hospital – Rehabilitation Unit
- Refurbish the existing rehabilitation unit by Q3 2023
In 2024 we plan to;
- Launch a Regional 24/7 Arterial and Emergency Vascular Service at CUH Wilton, centralising all high risk / emergency care for Cork, and open a new 24/7 Hybrid Theatre at CUH Wilton
- Open a new Stem Cell Laboratory at CUH Wilton
- Open a new MRI for Cardiac Diagnostics at CUH Wilton
- Open a new MRI for Cancer Radiotherapy Planning at CUH Wilton
- Open the first phase of a new Outpatients Facility at our Curaheen Campus in Cork City
- Open a new Endoscopy Unit at Bantry General Hospital
- Open a new Ward (24 beds) and Outpatients Department at Mallow General Hospital
- Open a new ‘Staff & Visitor’ Park & Ride network supporting access to CUH services in Cork City
- Open a 20 bed extension to our medium complexity Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at St Finbarr’s Hospital
- Open a new high complexity / high intensity rehabilitation facility in Cork (tbc)
- Open a new satellite administration hub for CUHG at Abtran in Cork City
In 2025 we plan to;
- Centralise all Cancer Surgery for the region at CUH
- Centralise Upper GI & Bariatric Surgery at CUH
- Open 2 additional Endoscopy Facilities at CUH Wilton Regional Elective Hub
- Open 2 additional Surgical Theatres at CUH Wilton Regional Elective Hub
In 2027 we plan to;
- Open a new Comprehensive Cancer Centre at CUH Wilton (tbc)
