Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that deals with the structure, functions and diseases of the eye. Cork University Hospital provides a regional tertiary referral ophthalmic service for the South-South West region including an Emergency Eye Trauma Service. Access to inpatient services for Ophthalmology is via the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH). We also provide a Diabetic Retinopathy Screening (DRS) Service on an outpatient basis (http://www.diabeticretinascreen.ie/)

The Department of Ophthalmology is staffed by five Ophthalmic Surgeons and two Ophthalmic Physicians. Non consultant staff includes one Specialist Registrar, three Registrars and five Senior House Officers. The clinic is further supported by nursing staff, an Orthoptist, Clinical Photographer and clerical staff.   There are currently ten consultant led clinics every week in the ophthalmology outpatient department on a weekly basis excluding the Diabetic Retinal Screening clinics. All clinics are staffed by a consultant and Non Consultant Hospital Doctors in training. A broad range of Ophthalmic diseases are managed at in this unit including patients with Cataracts, Glaucoma, Uveitis, Macular Degeneration, Corneal issues, Acute Trauma, many other conditions and paediatric patients are assessed and treated in the outpatient and eye casualty service.
