Dr. Michael Clarkson

Areas of Interest:  Vasculitis and kidney transplantation.

Professional History:  Dr Clarkson (MB, BAO BCh, University of Dublin, Trinity College 1994) undertook postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology in Dublin 1994-2001 and was awarded an MD by thesis in 2002. He completed a clinical and research fellowship at The Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston (2001-2004). He was appointed to the staff of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital before taking up his current position in CUH in 2005.

His research interests include the immunobiology of transplant rejection and small vessel vasculitis. Dr Clarkson is the recipient of a Programme Project Grant from the Health Research Board of Ireland, has authored or co-authored over 35 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 8 book chapters and is editor of the Companion Handbook to Brenner and Rector’s ‘The Kidney'.

Dr Clarkson provides an outreach service to Kerry General Hospital.

Dr Liam Plant BSc MB FRCPE FRCPI

Consultant Renal Physician and Clinical Senior Lecturer in Nephrology

Areas of Interest: End-Stage Kidney Disease (Renal Transplantation, Renal Home Dialysis Therapies, Haemodialysis and Low Clearance Kidney Disease); Disorders of Fluid & Electrolyte Balance; Renal Disease in Pregnancy; Renal Disease in Cystic Fibrosis; Adolescent Transition; Quality of Life in Kidney Disease; Ethical Aspects of Kidney Disease; Organisation and Development of Renal Services.

Professional History: Dr Plant graduated in Physiology (1982) and Medicine (1985) from University College Cork. He completed General Professional Training in Medicine in Cork (1985-89), and entered Higher Specialist Training in Nephrology at The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (1989-1996). He was appointed as Consultant Renal Physician in the Department of Renal Medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 1996 and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medicine at The Edinburgh University Medical School in 1998. He has been a Consultant Renal Physician at Cork University Hospital since 2001. 

His research interests include renal disease in patients with cystic fibrosis, quality of life in end stage kidney disease and the epidemiology of renal disease in Ireland. Dr Plant has authored or co-authored over 60 medical publications and is a frequent invited contributor to regional, national and international medical conferences. 

He is a former (2002-05) National Specialty Director for Nephrology Training in Ireland, and is active in the delivery of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes of the University College Cork Medical School, by which he was awarded the 2015 Windle Award for his Contribution to UCC Medical School Teaching and Student Development. 

Dr Plant is the former (2003-09) Chair of the Irish National Renal Strategy Review Group and has been the National Clinical Director of the HSE National Renal Office (NRO) since 2009. The NRO is responsible for planning, coordinating and managing the strategic framework of Renal Services across the country.

Professor Joseph Eustace 

Consultant Nephrologist

Area of Interest:  Glomerulonephritis, Nutrition, bone and vascular health in CKD, dialysis and transplantation. Hyponatremia, Nephrolithiasis

Professional History:  Graduated MB, BAO BCh (UCD) 1990, undertook postgraduate training in General Internal Medicine and Nephrology in Dublin 1990-1996. Johns Hopkins University Hospital Clinical Nephrology Fellowship 1996-1998, Baltimore, USA. NIH funded Fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, 1997-1999, Baltimore USA. MHS (Clin Epi) Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, 1997-1998. Joined faculty of Nephrology, Johns Hopkins Hospital 1999, promoted to Assistant Professor in 2000, Director of Ambulatory Dialysis Services Johns Hopkins Hospital 2002-2005. State Commissioner, Maryland Kidney Commission 2002 – 2005. Consultant Nephrologist, Cork University Hospital 2005-current. 

Professor Eustace has previously been funded by the NIH (NIDDK), National Kidney Foundation and Johns Hopkins Clinical Scientist Award, has authored or co-authored over 45 peer reviewed original scientific papers and 8 book chapters. His current research interest is Vascular and Bone Health in Renal Transplant Recipients. 

Professor Eustace is currently the Director of the Health Research Board of Ireland funded Clinical Research Facility at University College Cork.

Dr Eva Long

Consultant Nephrologist

Professional History:  Dr Long (MB, BAO BCh, University College Cork, 2003) undertook postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology in Cork and Dublin 2003-2011 and was awarded accreditation in General Medicine and Nephrology by the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland in 2012. She completed a Clinical Renal Medicine Fellowship at Boston University Medical Centre, Boston, USA (2011-2013). She was appointed as Consultant Physician at CUH in 2014 and Consultant Physician and Nephrologist in 2015.

Dr Marek Mazur

Consultant Nephrologist & Clinical Senior Lecturer.

Area of Interest:  Clinical aspects of pancreas and kidney transplantation, living donor assessment, and renal disease associated with cancer and haematological disorders. Telemedicine.

Professional History:  Dr. Marek J. Mazur graduated from the University Medical School, Bydgoszcz, Poland (1991). After completing his internship in Poland he joined Dr. John Kane’s laboratory at the Cardiovascular Research Institute, University of California, San Francisco (1994-1996). He finished his Internal Medicine Residency Program at the Easton Hospital, Pennsyvania (Hahnemann University Affiliate) (1996-1999) having served as a Chief Resident in Internal Medicine (1998-1999). He completed a Fellowship in Nephrology at the Boston University School of Medicine, Boston (1999-2001) and in Transplant Medicine at the Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota. (2001-2002). He was appointed an Instructor in Medicine at College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic in 2002 and Assistant Professor in Medicine in 2003.

In 2002 he joined Division of Transplantation Medicine and Department of Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, Arizona as a Senior Associate Consultant and in 2005 was promoted to a Consultant in Nephrology and Transplantation with joint appointment in Division of Nephrology & Hypertension, Department of Internal Medicine, as well as Division of Transplantation Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, Arizona. He was one of the founders of a Pancreas Transplant Program at the Mayo Clinic Arizona and served as a Medical Director of Pancreas Transplant Program since 2003 till 2010.

Dr. Mazur joined CUH Renal Medicine team as a Renal Consultant in June 2010.  He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer I Nephrology at University College Cork and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine, College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Mazur is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology with American Board of Internal Medicine.  He holds full registration with Irish Medical Council and is included in Irish Medical Council Register of Medical Specialists in both General (Internal) Medicine and Nephrology.

He is a member of American Society of Nephrology, American Society of Transplantation and Irish Society of Nephrology.

Dr. Mazur authored or co-authored over 20 peer reviewed scientific papers and over 50 abstracts. 

Dr. Mazur participates in provision of renal services to Kerry General Hospital and speaks fluent English and Polish.
