Professional History: Dr O’Mahony graduated from UCC in 1983, and after general professional training in Cork, trained in gastroenterology and general medicine in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bradford and Leeds. He was awarded the MD by thesis in 1991. Prior to returning to Cork in 2001, he was Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Leeds General Infirmary (1996 to 2001). Dr O’Mahony has had a variety of academic interests over the years, including mucosal immunology, coeliac disease, quality assurance in endoscopy, ethical aspects of PEG feeding, and medical humanities. He is the author or co-author of 66 peer-reviewed publications, 8 book chapters, and one book and is currently associate editor for medical humanities at the Journal of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He is an invited lecturer at several international meetings, and gave the de Pazzi lecture in 2015. |
