Consultant Hepatologist:  Dr Orla M Crosbie

Professional History:

MD degree UCC, initially trained in CUH, then the National Liver Unit, St Vincent’s Hospital with a period of research at the National Cancer Centre Amsterdam. Completed MD thesis in St Vincents Hospital. Then moved to the UK to complete training in East Anglia in Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge and Norwich University Hospital Norfolk. Returned to CUH in 2003.

Dr Crosbie is an active member of the Irish Society of Gastroenterology, the European and American Association for the Study of the Liver and is Lead for Post Graduate education with the Irish Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (Irspen). Dr Crosbie runs the Hepatology Service at CUH and is the clinical representative for CUH with ICORN (the Irish Hepatitis c outcome and research Network). Former National Specialty trainer for Gastroenterology and Council Member with RCPI and actively involved in organising educational activities for the College.

Consultant Physician: Dr Seamus O'Mahony

Professional interests: Endoscopy, Inflammatory bowel disease, medical humanities

Professional History:

Dr O’Mahony graduated from UCC in 1983, and after general professional training in Cork, trained in gastroenterology and general medicine in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bradford and Leeds. He was awarded the MD by thesis in 1991. Prior to returning to Cork in 2001, he was Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Leeds General Infirmary (1996 to 2001). Dr O’Mahony has had a variety of academic interests over the years, including mucosal immunology, coeliac disease, quality assurance in endoscopy, ethical aspects of PEG feeding, and medical humanities. He is the author or co-author of 66 peer-reviewed publications, 8 book chapters, and one book and is currently associate editor for medical humanities at the Journal of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He is an invited lecturer at several international meetings, and gave the de Pazzi lecture in 2015.

Luminal Gastroenterology; Advanced endoscopy including GIT stenting & ERCP’s; Inflammatory Bowel Disease and functional bowel disorders; Bowel dsymotility and human gut microbial responses.

Professional History:

Dr Zulquernain (MBBS, MRCP, FRCPI) graduated from Ayub Medical College in Pakistan in 1999 and then undertook post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology in Ireland. He was awarded accreditation in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology from the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland in 2012. 

He was appointed as a Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist in Cork University Hospital in 2012. He is a senior clinical lecturer in the department of medicine and gastroenterology in UCC. He has been the Lead for the Endoscopy User’s Group in CUH since 2013. 

Dr Zulquernain’s previous research looked at the immunologic response to gastric helicobacter pylori infection and his present research interests include involvement of gut microbiota in gastrointestinal motility.
