Cork University Hospital’s Emergency Department (CUH ED) is now the busiest in the country seeing over 65,000 patients per year. This is provided by a very dedicated hard working and experienced group of doctors, nurses and allied health care staff who are there when you need them 24/7 for your emergency. Our consultants in Emergency Medicine also provide a commitment to the Mercy University Hospital as well as governance of the Local Injury Units in the Network.
CUH ED provides emergency care to Adults and Children and caters for all emergencies from Major Trauma, Stroke, Heart Attack, Sepsis to so called ‘minor’ injuries. Cork University Hospital is well positioned to be a designated Major Trauma Centre when trauma networks in Ireland are configured having all trauma specialties on site. We offer core and higher specialist training in Emergency Medicine (EM) and are a training site for Undergraduate Medicine and Nursing, Emergency Nursing as well as Paramedicine and Military Medicine training. CUH ED hosts Ireland’s first dedicated multi-disciplinary ED Research Group and has secured HRB and industry grant funding for national and international research studies. We are designated nationally to provide pre-hospital support with a fully equipped rapid response car and telemedicine advice for Advanced Paramedics and ships at sea. The ED runs a well-established Clinical Decision Unit managing 16% of admissions to CUH as well as supporting admission avoidance strategies. We have a Paediatric and Adult Sedation program whereby certain conditions can be dealt with in the ED that in other institutions require inpatient admission and operating theatre time.
