The physiotherapy gym is always a hive of activity, providing treatment for a wide range of inpatient and outpatient, adult and paediatric conditions.
Gym Inpatients
Conditions ranging from oncology, neurology, orthopaedics, medical and surgical patients are treated in the physiotherapy gym. Physiotherapy treatment in the gym consists of an assessment to determine the needs and goals of that patient. An individual treatment programme is then designed, incorporating strengthening, balance re-education, transfer training, gait re-education and patient education. The physiotherapist will use a wide variety of equipment in order to achieve their goals. Patients attend the gym when the ward physiotherapist feels they are ready for this rehabilitation. Families and carers of patients are encouraged to participate in their rehab treatment.
Gym Outpatients
A program of rehabilitation is provided for discharged inpatients and consultant referred outpatients. Assessment, education and treatment of patients with neurological conditions is provided. Treatment is aimed at increasing strength, balance, and physical function.
