Our Mission Statement
The Radiology Department is located on the Lower Ground floor of the hospital. It offers an extensive radiology service to all patients attending CUH either as an in-patient or out-patient from the South of Ireland. The radiology department provide scans, x-rays and procedures to diagnose and treat a range of medical conditions. When you come for your x-ray, scan or procedure you will meet a lot of people who wear different uniforms. Imaging provides a foundation for diagnosis of disease, aids in guiding treatment, supports image guided treatment to patients with certain conditions and assists in monitoring patient's progress.
CUH is the only level 1 trauma centre in the Republic of Ireland, this status is given because of the very wide range of specialities provided by the hospital, and CUH Radiology provides imaging to patients both locally and regionally. The department provides care to patients from other hospitals in the CUH Group, St. Finbarr's Hospital, St Mary's Orthopaedic Hospital (SMOH) and Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) and also referrals from other hospitals in the region and General Practitioners. Cork University Hospital is the designated Cancer Referral Centre for the Southern Region. The patient centered imaging services are provided by multidisciplinary staff including Consultant Radiologists, Specialist Registrars, Clinical Specialist Radiographers, Radiographers, Nurses, Physicists supported by Clerical, Administrative, Housekeeping and Portering staff.
The Consultant Radiologists provide training to Specialist Registrars in Radiology under the auspices of the Faculty of Radiologists of Royal College Surgeons Ireland and also teaches UCC Medical students, Surgical and Medical trainees in Radiology. The department has a Professor of Radiology which is a joint appointment with UCC. The department also has a full time lecturer. Members of the department present at national and international conferences which leads and contributes to a significant number of publications. Radiographers participate in the training of student Radiographers under the auspices of University College Dublin.
